Brain injury is the fastest growing disability with more people surviving their injuries. A brain injury can result from any of the following: TRAUMA: Industrial accidents Sports injuries Assaults & Domestic Violence Cerebral Haemorrhages & surgical intervention Road Traffic accidents HYPOXIC DAMAGE: Following cardiac arrest Hypoglycaemic coma Epilepsy Drug overdoses POST-VIRAL INFECTIONS: Encephalitis Meningitis Other inflammatory diseases of the brain This list is not exhaustive and there are many other causes. The following causes account for *Road traffic accidents - 40-50% *Domestic/industrial - 20-30% *Sports/recreational -10-15% *Assaults - 10% 20% of brain injuries in children are caused by cycling accidents.
