The Community Befriending Scheme runs throughout the whole of Dorset. It aims to reduce the feelings of isolation often experienced after brain injury and to offer friendship and support whilst promoting community integration. The scheme introduces volunteers to people so that they can develop new interests, meet new faces or go to new places. Volunteering We need volunteers to work on our befriending scheme. This operates throughout the county. Isolation is a big barrier to people after brain inury so if you think you could help someone by taking them swimming, to a short college course or just out for coffee, please contact us.
Janet, a volunteer on the Buddy Scheme, writes the following " I was introduced to the Buddy Scheme in November 2003 by Poole Volunteer Bureau. I started meeting a lady soon after the introduction. We soon found that we had lots in common, relating to our childhood and soon also became very aware of each other's feelings. I was later introduced to a second lady, again we shared a lot of interests. We go out to interesting places, for a few hours. We can do just "girlie" things such as window shopping, walks, pursuing hobbies. The buddy scheme has very much been a two way process of enjoyment for each of us."
Our original funding for two years from the Community Fund ended in February 2004. We had, however, agreed with the Community Fund that we would use monies not used from the original bid to continue the project until a decision had been made about our new bid for funding for three years from April 2004.
This funding has now ceased, however Headway Dorset will continue to develop the services we offer.
We currently support 23 clients at the Community Befriending Scheme and have 10 volunteers. There is a short wait whilst we are awaiting suitable volunteers.
WE URGENTLY REQUIRE VOLUNTEERS TO WORK ON OUR BEFRIENDING SCHEME. This scheme operates throughout the county so it doesn't matter where you live. Isolation is a big barrier to people after brain inury so if you think you could help someone by taking them swimming, to a short college course or just out for coffee, please contact us.
If you have a few hours to spare each week and have an interest you would like to share then we would love to hear from you.
