 "1999 wasn't the best of years for me as I found myself wrapped around a tree whilst still sat in a car !! I was lucky that I survived but suffered memory loss due to a head injury. Headway Dorset came to visit and to offer their support" Rehabilitation Centres-in both Poole and Dorchester. Each centre can offer a structured program of rehabilitation, individual therapy assessments of Physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and Occupational therapy, cognitive rehabilitation and complementary therapies.Other activities that can be offered include conservation, pottery, swimming, gym, woodwork, art and pony driving. The Poole Centre is open Monday - Friday with a Centre group every Wednesday from 9.30 am - 3.30pm and the Dorchester centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9am - 4.30 pm.
Pre work assessment and Re-training- through the use of our charity shop and conservation projects supported by Occupational Therapists. We can also support people in returning to their place of work after their injury. 'With the combination of working at the shop and doing the course I more confident and have more belief in myself. I wasn't sure before the course started if I would be able to do it, but it did get easier as the weeks went by. By the end of the course I felt I had enjoyed it and got a lot out of it'
Psychology and Counselling- cognitive rehabilitation and neuro-psychology assessment and treatment plans and specialist counsellors with emphasis on adjustment to brain injury for the individual and the family. Short courses in relaxation are also offered.
Benefits Advice- On entitlement and how to claim, as well as advice on tribunals and appeals
Community Support Nurse - will visit in the hospital and at home to offer advice and support to brain injury survivors, their families and carers. Also runs Carers groups throughout the County
Community Befriending Scheme- Offers people with brain injury the opportunity to access community and leisure activities, minimising isolation and social exclusion, and promoting community integration
Case Management - Headway Dorset are able to provide case management services following instruction from your solicitor and are members of BABICM (British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers)
Assessment - Headway Dorset support the Continuing Care leads for local PCT's, assisting in the assessment of need for people after brain injury.
Headway Dorset accepts referrals for any adult who has has an acquired brain injury . We accept referrals for any of our services from Care Managers,Social Workers GP's and other health professionals. We also welcome self referrals.A referral form is available to download from this site. Once a referral has been received it will be discussed within an Inter-disciplinary team meeting held weekly and if appropriate a referral appointment offered.
Headway Dorset's Rehabilitation Team works with an inter-disciplinary approach and includes
State Registered Nurses ( one RMN with Community Psychiatric experience, two RNMH with behavioural expertise and both trained in Cognitive rehabilitation and members of the Society of Cognitive Rehab, two RGN)
Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Psychologists
Occupational Therapists with brain injury experience, special interest in vocational rehabilitation and mental health expertise
Physiotherapist, with expertise in neuro-physio
Speech and Language Therapist
Counsellors
Rehabilitation Assistants, each acting as individual keyworkers within the centres and within the community
